INDIVIDUALS RECOGNIZED AS HUMAN RIGHTS HEROES FOR HELPING EVERY SECTOR OF SOCIETY
The Youth for Human Rights Hero Awards honor those who are changing the lives of others through human rights education, among them the inspiring example of Art and Culture of Italy and others spearheading social betterment and peace.
A special highlight of the annual International Human Rights Summits are the Youth for Human Rights Hero Awards, acknowledging those whose courage and determination have raised human rights awareness in their respective nations and communities.
This year, among the four stellar individuals honored with the award was the President of Art and Culture in Italy Maria Elena Martini who received the award for both herself and in memory of her late human rights partner, Daniele Nardi.
Indian actress Sheena Chohan and Washington, DC, activist Travis Ellis were also awardees. (See more about Travis’s work on the next page.)
Martini teamed up with alpinist Daniele Nardi to reach thousands of youth in the Lazio region.
Nardi carried out numerous expeditions to the world’s tallest mountains carrying the “Flag of Human Rights,” a special flag signed by schoolchildren in support of human rights.
We honor these four heroes for their selfless work that is so needed across the planet to bring peace through human rights education.
Prior to his trips, these students were taught their basic human rights with the support of the Lazio regional government which is concerned about the nearly 50 percent of pupils aged 11 to 17 victimized by bullying.
Today Martini carries on the work she and Nardi began through human rights events, marches and collaborations.
Sheena Chohan has been an Ambassador of Youth for Human Rights South Asia since 2011, reaching people both through media and activities across the region, especially in India and Bangladesh. Through seminars, she has directly taught over 7,000 youth about their human rights and reached millions more through radio, newspapers and online media outlets, gaining her the nickname “Human Rights Girl.” To learn more, watch a recent documentary about her work at scientology.tv/SChohan.
